Westerville South Theatre performs its first movie musical for fall production

Westerville South High School Troupe 513 is kicking off its 2020-21 season opener with “Ranked,” a musical set in a dystopian world where class rank — determined by grades and test scores — defines each students’ worth.

Theatre Director Matt Wolfe selected “Ranked” because it was a new work that students could develop on their own at a time when much of their art is being created individually.

“I wanted to create an experience where the students could work on something that has no expectations like when we do spring musicals and they watch the Broadway version,” he said. “In the end, under the circumstances, this gave us the ability to work with the writers directly and create something special for them that will always remind them of this moment in history.”

The program will have three movie previews 8 p.m. Sept. 25, 26 and 27 at the Westerville Amphitheatre. Tickets are limited and social distancing will be enforced. Those interested in viewing the movie virtually can also purchase tickets for a live-streamed link, which will be sent 24 hours before the performance. Tickets can be purchased here

“It has certainly been an adventure and a way to distract from all the madness,” Wolfe said. “I am so proud of our students and the incredible things they can accomplish when met with adversity. It has been uncharted territory and we are still in the midst of making the magic happen.”
