Throughout this school year, sixth grade Social Studies students at Heritage Middle School have been learning about the importance of geography for career choices.  Earlier in the year, pupils in the 6th grade Advanced Social Studies class at Heritage were challenged by teacher Jenn Cole and gifted facilitator Debbie Pellington to “think like a cartographer” and create a new world map projection for the City of Westerville.  Students were visited by Emily Schaefer, a GIS Analyst, and Tom Lodge, a Planner from the City of Westerville, to learn more about the technology used in city planning.  A winning map projection was selected.

As the study of physical geography continued, students investigated not only how climate and weather influences where and how people live, but also the effect weather can have on the economy of an area. As an extension to this unit, meteorologist Andrew Buck Michael, from WSYX Channel 6, was invited to come and speak.  Students learned about the job of a meteorologist, the technology used in meteorology, and about the factors that affect climate and weather. They enjoyed the opportunity to engage in a question-and-answer session during this special learning opportunity.
