Westerville Schools are among National Winners in Continental Math League Contest

The 35th Continental Mathematics League Contest, facilitated through the Gifted Education Department in conjunction with advanced math teachers, is an annual tradition across the Westerville City Schools middle schools.  Sixth and seventh grade students in advanced math classes have the opportunity to participate in this national math competition where problem solving, analytical reasoning, mathematical computation, and reading skills are celebrated and even improved.  Westerville City Schools pupils competed in the Pythagorean Contest Division with five meets in which students had 30 minutes to complete six multi-step problems.

Top scoring sixth grade students were:

  • Blendon Middle School: Quentin Sheets (top scorer), Landon Gibbs, Gloria Rogers, and Joey Hatfield (teacher: Emily Winship)
  • Genoa Middle School: top scorers Nicholas Drexel, Tatum Hubble, Caroline Kiefaber, Alison Nussbaum, and Elena Summanen (teacher: Pam Charleston)
  • Heritage Middle School: Michael Murray (top scorer) and Mollie Kinkead (teacher: Katie Langenderfer)  
  • Walnut Springs Middle School: Grant Schneider and Brandon Pate (tied for top score) and Simon Ebbrecht (teachers: Maria Zahran and Melynda Amrine)

This year, the 6th grade teams from Genoa and Heritage Middle Schools were recognized as one of six National Winners from across the United States with each school compiling 180 out of a possible 180 points for the year.

In addition, for the first time this year, the students in the advanced 7th grade Math Classes also participated in the competition.

Top scoring seventh grade students were:

  • Blendon Middle School: Trebor Self (top scorer), Peter Heermann, Dominic Iquina, and Oliva Goff (teacher: Beth Wiand)
  • Genoa Middle School: top scorers Dylan Gorgias, Abigail Henck, Nathan Henson, and Aishee Mukherjee (teacher: Leah Sadler)
  • Heritage Middle School: Nayyar Ali (top scorer), Caroline Bowling, and Sammy Gurgiolo (teacher: Jim Dean)
  • Walnut Springs Middle School:  Xiaowen Li (top scorer) and Connor Madden (teacher: Melynda Amrine)

The 7th grade teams from Genoa and Heritage Middle Schools were also recognized this year as one of eight National winning teams.
