Westerville Students Advance to National History Day Statewide Competition

A number of students from the Westerville City School district participated in District 6 History Day Competition on March 11 at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware.  Research and projects were created following the theme, Taking a Stand

Moving on to the State contest from Genoa Middle School are: 

  • Lilliana Winkler, Junior Individual Documentary, Witold Pilecki.  Lisa Lunn, Deanna McDaniel, teachers;
  • Emma Snyder, Dilara Sen, Laura Wolfe, Junior Group Documentary, Alice Hamilton.  Drew Farrell, Deanna McDaniel, teachers; and
  • Kyra Lesmerises, Junior Individual Website, Rachel Carson:  How One Woman and One Book Saved Our Environment.  Caley Nestor-Baker, Deanna McDaniel, teachers.

Heritage Middle School History Day students advancing to the State competition are:

  • Anna Sekeres and Tahira Johnson, Junior Group Performance, The Dancer’s Story.  Jennifer Cole, teacher; and
  • Colin Brame, Junior Individual Paper, Indifference: The Tuskegee Syphilis Study. Patrick Acocks, teacher.

Walnut Springs Middle School students advancing to the State competition are: 

  • Abby Cumming-Vukovic, Junior Individual Website, Raoul Wallenberg: One Man Can Stand For Thousands.  Pat Schirtzinger, Jean Trimble, teachers;
  • Xiaowen Li, Junior Individual Website, Into Living Perdition: The Story of Witold Pilecki.  Pat Schirtzinger, Jean Trimble, teachers;
  • Ethan Weaver, Junior Individual Exhibit, Col. Shaw and the 54th Massachusetts.  Pat Schirtzinger, teacher;
  • Rebekah Fannin, Junior Individual Exhibit, Jane Addams.  Pat Schirtzinger, teacher; and
  • Anna Whiting, Junior Paper, Horace Mann: Taking a Stand for Public Education Reform in America.  Pat Schirtzinger, teacher.

Moving on to the State competition from Westerville Central High School is:

  • Ema Rennie, Senior Paper, The Magnuson Act of 1943:  Repeal of the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882.  Deanna McDaniel, teacher.

All student projects will compete at the State level at Ohio Wesleyan on April 29.
