Veterans from American Legion Post 141 were honored guests at the Heritage Middle School assembly held on November 11.
Students and staff at Heritage Middle School have celebrated Tolerance Month with many school wide initiatives. Several weeks leading up to Veterans’ Day, pupils were presented with the Military Core Values: Respect, Integrity, Honor, Duty, Courage, Loyalty and Service. Each child was asked to choose one of the values, write about it, and set goals for how they would live their word every day while showing tolerance to others. Throughout the weeks they started a Fill a Bag campaign, where homerooms collected needed care package items for the Marine Corps Family Support Community. Cards and letters for both active service men and women and Veterans were written, and three Walls of Honor were erected, paying respect to family and friends who have served or are currently serving. On Monday, November 9, during a Lunch and Learn, students heard from motivational speaker Tim Brown, author of Boys Won’t be Boys. He spoke about living uncommon in a common world and told the youngsters that living their core value would lead to a path of greatness.
On Wednesday, November 11, 1,000 students and staff walked to the gymnasium in total silence to show their respect to many veterans from the American Legion Post 141. During the assembly, they heard what it means to be a veteran. The 8th grade band and choir performed patriotic selections and several pupils read letters thanking the men and women for their service to our country. Students will continue to collect items and prepare care packages to be sent to our troops at the end of November.
