Chris Curry, representing VFW Post 7883, attended the Board of Education meeting to celebrate winners of the Patriot’s Pen and Voice of Democracy contests.
Several pupils were recognized by the Ellis E. Woodrow Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 7883 for their excellence in two national essay contests: Patriot’s Pen and Voice of Democracy. Top scorers were honored at the Westerville City Schools Board of Education meeting on Monday evening, March 11.
The 2018-2019 Patriot’s Pen theme was Why I Honor the American Flag. Students from Genoa Middle School, taught by Leslie Thompson, completed a clean sweep of the local awards, taking first, second and third place. The 2018-2019 theme for the Voice of America audio-essay program was Why My Vote Matters. Under the direction of teachers Dr. Ben Hartnell and Beth Baryon, Westerville North students placed second and third. A senior from Olentangy High School won the local competition.
