Ten students from Genoa Middle School successfully competed in the MathCounts Chapter contest held at Columbus State Community College on Saturday, February 9.  The Franklin County Chapter of the Ohio Society of Professional Engineers sponsored the event, which is designed to heighten each pupil’s awareness of the importance of mathematics.  Each student participates as an individual and as part of a team.

Coached by parent Annie Ghosh, Genoa participants were Alicia Deng, Noah Gibson, A.J. Boyd, Rohan Mawalkar, Ben Yasnowski, Leanne Ngo, Anthony Malek, Michael Robinson, Isaac Choo and Andy Wang.

Genoa won first place in the team competition.  Deng, Mawalkar, Boyd and Gibson were on the winning team, and they will move on to the State MathCounts competition on March 9, also at Columbus State.  Boyd also won fourth place in individual rounds and first place in the Countdown Round.

More than 320 students from 40 schools competed in this event.  Five schools and 10 individuals are advancing to the State contest.  The top four individuals at the Ohio competition will progress to the national Raytheon MATHCOUNTS Competition in Orlando, Florida, from May 11-14.
