The Westerville Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW; http://www.aauw.org), in cooperation with the Westerville City Schools Gifted Education Department, has awarded four $300 scholarships to the Be WISE Camp at Denison University this summer.  Sixth grade Westerville recipients are:

  • Jessica Adongo, Blendon;
  • Laiken Hendricks, Genoa;
  • Danielle Rollyson, Heritage; and
  • Anna Whiting, Walnut Springs.

Founded in 1881 and with nearly 1,000 branches across the country, AAUW is a national organization promoting equity and education for women and girls.  AAUW President and retired Westerville City Schools math teacher Miriam Holmes, along with AAUW Liaison Cathy Stoessner, met with the recipients and their family members at an informational meeting and reception held at Walnut Springs Middle School on May 4 to discuss the Be WISE camp.

Be WISE is a mathematics, science and technology camp for girls entering grades 7 or 8 in the fall of 2017.  It features a separate curriculum for each grade level, emphasizing hands-on activities in math and science.  This summer marks the camp’s 27th anniversary. More than 3,000 girls have participated.  This year’s residential camp will accommodate 130 young women and will be held from June 12 - 16.  For more information, please visit http://www.bewisecamp.orc.
