For some Westerville students, Spring Break provided an opportunity to travel to Italy and Iceland, where they experienced diverse cultures, fascinating histories, and stunning landscapes.

On the Italy tour, pupils walked the footsteps of ancient Romans; from the 2,000-year-old Colosseum in Rome to the houses lining Pompeii’s perfectly preserved streets.  They walked under the gilded archways of St. Peter’s Cathedral in Vatican City and basked in the natural beauty of the Sorrento coast and island of Capri.  When asked what the highlights of the tour were, the nearly unanimous answer was “food and friendships!”  Follow their adventures on social media @wshstravelclub on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Seventeen students from Westerville Central, North and South high schools made the trek to Iceland for a tour focusing on science and history.  They gloried in the beauty of the waterfalls, Gullfoss and Godafoss, and the split between the tectonic plates.  They marveled at geothermal energy and how it is used for everything from heating homes and swimming pools to providing electricity for the entire population of Iceland.  Comments from the students about their favorite things ranged from learning about the culture (“Who doesn’t love Vikings?”) to the breathtaking geography and the technology of harnessing the earth’s power for sustainable energy.  Check out their Instagram @westervilleoutlanders.
