Westerville Education Foundation Teachers of the Month for April 2019

The Westerville Education Foundation (WEF) named three educators Teacher of the Month for March – Amanda Koenig, Alcott Elementary; Melissa Borger, Pointview Elementary; and David Haney, Westerville South High School.

Amanda Koenig is described by her nominator as caring and motivational.  “She cares about her students and demands they respect each other and is incredibly inclusionary,” says her nominator.  Koenig sets high expectations for her students and works with them to strive to put forward their best effort.  “She has the perfect balance of classroom management skills, challenging students/meeting them where they are, treating everyone fairly, celebrating successes (small or big) and caring for her students.”  Koenig’s nominator concludes by saying, “Mrs. Koenig has raised the level of expectation for our child, which I feel is preparing them for middle and high school years, and beyond.”

Melissa Borger is described by her nominator as encouraging and dedicated.  “Miss Borger has been an incredible teacher!  I can’t believe the care and attention she devotes to not one, but two kindergarten classrooms,” says her nominator.  Borger motivates children and gets them excited about what they are learning in the classroom.  “My child went from having no interest in reading to always wanting to point out letters, sound out new words, and gleefully pointing out his sight words.  He is so fascinated by math that he asks for extra math homework.”  Borger’s nominator concludes by saying, “She is so encouraging and so dedicated.  As a teacher myself, I truly appreciate all of the work she puts in and how she goes above and beyond to keep parents in the loop.”

David Haney is described as caring, inspiring and motivational.  “David Haney is not our child’s teacher, but is their golf coach.  And even as our child’s golf coach, he has followed the progress and the grades of the boys on the team.”  Haney works with students outside of the classroom to ensure they are understanding content and helping them improve their academics.  “He spent time with our son after school and helped him better understand the subject he was working on. We were amazed that he cared as much as he did and took the time to reach out and spend time helping our son improve his grade even though he wasn’t in his class.”  Haney’s nominator concludes by saying, “We were amazed and so happy that Mr. Haney took the time out of his busy schedule to reach out to our son (who was not in his class) because he needed help and spent time with him so he could gain a better understanding of the subject.  Westerville South is lucky to have such a caring, inspiring and motivational teacher on their staff.”
