Westerville City School District officials invite parents and guardians to mark their calendars for 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on January 25, 2020, and encourage them to attend one or more Parent Prep sessions that day at Westerville North High School (950 County Line Road).  Parent Prep is a new district initiative offering several 45-minute sessions in which participants will learn hands-on strategies in the areas of Mental Health, Wellness & Student Well Being; Technology; College & Career Readiness; School Safety, Culture & Climate; and Study Skills, Organizational Skills & Family Resources.

Parent Prep sessions offer valuable information to families of children at all grade levels and will address Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) topics such as such as Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Responsible Decision-Making, and Relationship Skills.  An electronic registration form is being finalized and soon will be distributed for parents/guardians to select up to six class offerings.  Attendees will be able to leave and return as they please throughout the day in order to participate in the classes of most interest to them.  Classes will target age-appropriate strategies for Stress Management, Anxiety, Test Taking & Executive Functioning Skills, and Parenting Basics.  Law enforcement experts also will provide information about school safety and various issues faced by today’s youth.  Due to the sensitive nature of some topics being presented throughout the day, this event is for adults only; students or other children are not permitted to attend.  Additional details soon will be available at http://www.wcsoh.org/ParentPrep.

SEL is the process of developing self-awareness, self-control, and interpersonal skills necessary for school, work, and life success.  According to the Committee for Children, people with strong social-emotional skills are better able to cope with everyday challenges and benefit academically, professionally, and socially.  Children thrive.  Schools win. Workplaces benefit. Society strengthens.  Learn more at https://www.cfchildren.org.  The Westerville City School District thanks Westerville Education Challenge (WEC) for its support of this inaugural Parent Prep event.  While no lunch break is planned, WEC is providing free box lunches from Canes, which will be available between classes.  Water will also be offered, along with a vegetarian option.
