Friday, May 3, was a big day for fifth graders at Robert Frost Elementary because that was the day they got to meet their pen pals from Westerville North High School.  All year, freshmen in Amy Birtcher’s English classes have been corresponding with fifth graders in Whitney Magers’ room.  Around 1:00 p.m., the elementary students walked between the raindrops from Robert Frost to North, where they spent about an hour socializing with their new pals and getting to know more about high school.

This was the group’s first face-to-face meeting, and the freshmen were prepared with welcome signs like those that they might use to help someone connect with them in an airport.  After introductions were made, the freshmen gave their pen pals a cardinal and gold swirled wristband to commemorate the day, that read, #PenPalParty2019.

After that, the pupils made their way to the auxiliary gym, where they played basketball, Uno, Jenga, chess and checkers.  Some even colored together.  Many had their photos taken as one more souvenir from a year of writing letters.  Most of the youngsters also got to tour the massive building to get a better idea about what life in high school is going to be like.

“The event seems to have been a success, so there just might be another one next year,” observed Birtcher.  “Stay tuned!”
