Kindergarten students observe the physiological effects on an object in a vacuum, and discover how that relates to the atmospheric pressure found on planets.  Volunteer Holly Schmitt was present to explain the concept and answer questions.

COSI-On-Wheels brought its Astounding Astronomy program to Robert Frost Elementary on Tuesday, September 22, so students could explore our solar system without ever leaving their school.  The day began with a 45-minute interactive assembly that examined:

  • The sizes and distances between the planets in our solar system;
  • The electromagnetic spectrum;
  • The extreme cold of the outer planets and deep space;  and
  • How Earth is the only planet we know of that contains life.

Hands-on activities that followed included maneuvering a remotely operated vehicle, identifying constellations, and watching the effect of air pressure on a marshmallow.  This program aligns with the Ohio Academic Content Standards and compliments the National Science Education Standards that allows pupils to discover the impact that chemistry and space technology has on their daily lives.  Twenty-five greatly appreciated parent volunteers manned each activity station.
