Found within the 400+ page Every Student Succeeds Act is a little-known “military student identifier” provision requiring states to track the academic performance of pupils from military families.  Federal education law now requires school systems to monitor the test scores, attendance and graduation rates of some 1.8 million children whose parents are U.S. service members, the same way they are required to monitor other student subgroups based upon socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, disability, English language proficiency, and gender.

All parents of children in the Westerville City School District soon will receive a notification asking them to log into the Power School parent portal and complete the form called Military Families.  The District is required to collect this information by the end of this school year.
