Student work submitted by fifth grade Hanby Magnet Elementary teacher Tara Norling and Curriculum Coordinator Dr. Jan Fedorenko has been selected for inclusion in the 2015 Jerry Tollifson Art Criticism Open, sponsored by the Ohio Art Education Association (OAEA). In the Division 2: Grades 3 through 5 category of this year’s competition, Donovan Varney placed second for his essay on Harvest Time by Mary Lou Weidman. Fallon Keeton tied for third place for his essay on the Hmong Story Cloth, Artist unknown.
They will be honored during the Ohio Art Education Association Youth Art Month Awards Recognition Ceremony on Saturday, March 14, from 12:30-1:30 p.m. at the State Teachers Retirement Systems building in downtown Columbus.
The late Jerry Tollifson (one of OAEA’s most beloved, colorful, dedicated and influential members) conceived this writing competition as an annual opportunity to recognize students for their ability to articulate and compose critical responses to artworks, thereby empowering them with increased discipline and confidence as they approach art and life. The contest supports Ohio’s Visual Art Standards by encouraging students to use critical thought and judgment to reach deeper understandings of an artwork’s meaning, value, and significance.
