District announces restrictions on staff passes, Superintendent’s Gold Appreciation Cards for athletic events

Due to recent state-ordered restrictions on event attendance and venue capacity, the Westerville City School District (WCSD) will not be issuing athletic passes to staff this fall and community members holding a Superintendent’s Gold Appreciation Card (Gold Card) cannot be guaranteed admission to events.

A time-honored tradition in the district, Gold Cards are available to district residents over the age of 60 who also hold a Golden Buckeye Card. Historically, Gold Card holders received free admission to district sporting events, concerts, musicals and plays. Unfortunately, new state orders no longer make this possible.

Governor Mike DeWine’s recent order permitting fall high school athletics places significant restrictions on the number of spectators allowed to attend such events. For WCSD, venues will be restricted to 15 percent of their total capacity. Priority will be given to family members of students participating in the event. The maximum number of tickets each family can purchase will be determined by venue capacity. In many instances, participants’ family members will fill a venue to its total allowable capacity.

At the high school level, in order to ensure compliance with spectator restrictions, all ticket sales will be made in advance through an online ordering system that also can limit the total number of tickets sold. If a family member holds a district-issued Gold Card, the system will allow them to receive a free ticket to the event.

Additional details regarding ticket availability, venue capacity, and spectator requirements will soon be communicated directly to families by their respective schools.
