Educators Tre Rieves and Kate Mantenieks will present a seminar at this fall’s National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Conference, which will be held in Houston from November 15-18.  Their session, titled See Me and I will See You: How ELA and ESL teacher leaders created a learning community to empower teachers to have culturally responsive conversations surrounding multicultural literature, was accepted this week.

In December, Westerville Sunrise Rotary presented Westerville City Schools with several dozen books to distribute to elementary buildings, along with a check for $500 to continue to purchase multicultural books.  As they explored the best way to deliver the books and support teacher use of these materials, the English Language Arts and Curriculum and Instruction departments collaborated to offer after-school professional development around culturally responsive teaching.

“Multicultural literature in the hands of children is a powerful tool in making the world a more inclusive and positive place,” said Rieves.

“We are excited that we will be able to share this work on a national stage,” concluded Jennifer Knapp, Director, Curriculum and Instruction Services.
