Annehurst’s Homework Help Program is Giving Fifth Graders a Helping Hand

Seeing an Annehurst Elementary School classroom filled with fifth graders hard at work is not unusual, until you look at the clock and realize it’s 7:30 in the morning – and school doesn’t start until 9:05 a.m.!  Educators Tracy Price and Deneen Stewart decided to offer a special Homework Help program on Wednesday mornings beginning in October, not knowing if anybody would actually show up.  Turns out they did.  More than a dozen students and their parents have taken advantage of the offer to get ahead, and they have arrived bright and early and ready to learn.  They write a list on the board of assignments they could be working on, prioritize deadlines, and make choices about what to do based on that as well as if they need help or don’t have computers or internet access at home.  In addition to helping meet academic, social, emotional and socioeconomic needs, each child gets a hot egg biscuit sandwich to start their day.  “I feel strongly that this has made a positive difference to the students for a variety of reasons,” said Price, who hopes the program can be expanded into more grade levels and more schools.
