On Wednesday, October 23, students at staff at Mark Twain Elementary School dressed in orange in support of Unity Day. Children and adults gathered on the playground to pose for a picture under the direction of Guidance Counselor Serena Casale, who organized the affair.
Unity Day, the signature event of National Bullying Prevention Month, has been recognized in the United States since 2011. To show their support, individuals, schools, communities, and businesses throughout the country wear or display orange to advocate for students who have been bullied. One in five school-age children report being bullied at school. In the United States, this observation was initially created by Pacer’s National Bullying Prevention Center. Since its creation, several celebrities have endorsed the movement, including Anderson Cooper and Ellen DeGeneres.
