On Thursday, January 14, Mark Twain Elementary School hosted its annual Empty Bowls Charity Luncheon. The 4th grade students made ceramic bowls and 5th graders made ceramic plates, with guidance from art teacher Lindsay Gietz. Parents were invited to join their children for a soup and salad lunch costing $5.00, with proceeds going to the Westerville Area Resource Ministry (W.A.R.M.). Each got to take home the bowl or plate their child made. Entertainment was provided by the pupils themselves, who practiced may weeks in preparation and sang under the direction of music teacher Ian Murphy. Leadership Summit delegates volunteered their time on the day of the luncheon to assist with reservations, help parents locate their child’s bowl/plate and serve the soup and salad. This year, the benefit raised more than $200.
