The Dr. Martin Luther King Legacy Project is seeking nominees for the 2020 Alston Award, named in honor of Miriam Alston and the group of slaves she freed who traveled to the Westerville area in 1859. The theme of Westerville’s 2020 Martin Luther King Day Celebration Breakfast is, Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community?
Community members nominated will be considered using the following criteria:
- A person who exemplifies the characteristics demonstrated by Dr. King (tolerant, respectful, kind, brave and tenacious)
- A person who respects the differences in others around them
- A person who will take action when he/she sees an injustice
Nominators should submit one typewritten, double-spaced page that describes how this person “stepped toward the dream” with others within the Westerville community to help address and correct issues of diversity, injustice, or inequality. The deadline for nominations is November 11, 2019, and nomination forms can be found at

The Alston Award will be presented to one community member. He or she will be provided free registration to the Westerville MLK Celebration Breakfast on January 20, 2020, which begins at 7:30 a.m. at the Villa Milano Banquet and Conference Center, located at 1630 Schrock Road in Columbus. Presentation of the award will be made during the program. The winner will be notified in November.
