Twenty-four third grade children hailing from 15 different countries combined their talents, under the direction of teacher Kate Mantenieks and retired Ohio University Professor Dorothy Leal, to write Mighty Mustangs: The History of Hawthorne Elementary. The young authors not only learned much about their school’s history, but also honed their skills in using Chromebooks, formulating questions, interviewing, taking notes, and reporting their findings. In the end, they demonstrated how Common Core standards can be learned through a hands-on project like publishing a real book.
