Over the past 16 months, in collaboration with teachers and administrators, the Westerville City School District has been reviewing materials used for K-5 mathematics.  After gathering feedback and student data from pilot teachers, parents, the Westerville Education Association, principals, and instructional coaches, the recommended materials to be used will be Bridges Second Edition by The Math Learning Center.

Bridges in Mathematics is a comprehensive K–5 curriculum that equips teachers to fully implement the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics in a manner that is rigorous, coherent, engaging, and accessible to all learners.  The curriculum focuses on developing students’ deep understandings of mathematical concepts, proficiency with key skills, and ability to solve complex and novel problems.  Bridges blends direct instruction, structured investigation, and open exploration.  It taps into the intelligence and strengths of all students by presenting material that is as linguistically, visually, and kinesthetically rich as it is mathematically powerful.

Number Corner is a skill-building program that revolves around the classroom calendar, providing daily practice as well as continual encounters with broader mathematical concepts in 15–20 minutes of engaging instruction.  Revised to address the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, Number Corner second edition is an essential component of Bridges in Mathematics, but can be used to complement any K–5 curriculum.  Number Corner is easily upgraded to the full Bridges curriculum.

Westerville City Schools values feedback and encourages community members to provide input by completing a survey at https://goo.gl/forms/g9bCI3gSYYD4fhPx1. Community members can view a sample of the materials and Course of Study at the Westerville Public Library from March 23 - April 10.  The materials can also be seen by following the links within the public survey.
