Westerville City Schools gain the equivalent of nearly 67 full-time employees and hundreds of thousands of dollars toward student enrichment from parent and community support groups in the school district, according to a report released this week from Westerville Parent Council.
The 2013-2014 Volunteer Support Report tracks time, money and scholarship dollars donated by parent and community groups in Westerville City Schools. Westerville Parent Council compiles the information each year from its member groups, which include 34 different PTOs, PTAs and booster groups in the district’s elementary, middle and high schools.
“This report highlights the importance of parents and community members in Westerville Schools and the lives of Westerville children,” said Lisa Aucoin, president of Westerville Parent Council. “Through academic, athletic and community-building projects in Westerville schools, volunteers are there to support teachers and administrators and connect these schools to the wider community.”
Among the report’s findings for the 2013-2014 school year:
- Volunteers provided time equivalent to 66.94 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees, worth more than $1.3 million dollars in potential payroll.
- Volunteer organizations connected to the schools took in $467,820 for projects to pay for a variety of projects including special school events, field trip transportation, entry costs for special academic contests, athletic and band uniforms and other needs.
- Parent and booster organizations gave out $47,750 in scholarships to graduating seniors in Westerville high schools.
The report shows volunteerism in the district has continued to increase in recent years. Last year’s volunteer time in the schools increased by 7.6 percent and scholarship dollars given to graduating seniors from these community groups increased by 5.9 percent over the 2012-2013 school year.
The volunteer support reports for each non-profit group are required to meet filing requirements for the IRS and State of Ohio Attorney General and Secretary of State.
