Volunteer Jeff Richards, from Accenture, introduces Hour of Code to a class of fourth graders.
On Friday, December 8, every class at Emerson Elementary School expanded their knowledge of coding and collaboration for Hour of Code. Hour of Code helps introduce students to computer science coding basics with through fun interactive online activities. Pupils worked with game themes like Minecraft and Star Wars to practice coding skills and achieve leveled goals.
Volunteers from Accenture, a local tech consulting company, were on hand for the event (www.accenture.com). Accenture’s Emily Bechtol paired volunteers with classrooms for this all-day exercise. Children not only learned computer coding, but also learned about how important collaboration on projects is to the tech industry. To complete the project of the day, most youngsters worked in teams of two or more to simulate a real life tech-working environment. First graders Hunter Walston and Solene Lerner liked working together, saying, “We made a very good team. We got through it very well and we built bridges and stuff. And, we are friends!”
