Emerson fourth graders pose with their Science displays.

Last week, fourth and fifth grade students at Emerson Elementary School celebrated their first Science Day.  Fourth graders chose a science topic of interest and created a demonstration and display.  Fifth graders took part in a Science Fair and exhibited their experiments and findings. Parents and fellow students came to view the displays and listen to the students explain their projects.  Participants were excited and passionate about their studies.  Ambar Loya-Sotomayor’s project involved extracting DNA from strawberries.  “I liked that mine seemed complicated, but it was easier than I thought,” she said.  Fifth grader Landon Fulkerson remarked, “It was fun!  We learned the scientific method and had to apply it.  Also we had to be pretty organized.”

Teachers Jenny Findell and Mara Clark plan to make Science Day a new annual tradition at Emerson and hope to include more classes next year. “Students were so proud of their work. Having a Science Day celebration is a great way to get pupils involved and invested in their own learning,” said Clark.
