November 17-21 marked a very special period of learning at Emerson Magnet School, for that was International Week, and the theme was, “What a Wonderful World!”  International Week is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education.  It celebrates both international education and cultural understanding, focusing primarily on the importance of increasing knowledge and awareness of the world’s different cultures.  At Emerson, students got the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities.

On Monday, November 17, they prepared for their “trip around our wonderful world” by making passports and learning about the countries they would “visit.”  Tuesday brought a plethora of speakers from different countries including Haiti, Mendes of Sierra Leone, Korea, Syria, Scandinavia, South Africa, Japan, France and Somalia.  Students also focused on global issues and an expert in geography discussed the geography of music and how it connects us to the rest of the world.

On Wednesday, the youngsters walked to Hanby Elementary where they got to see a variety of animals from around the world, brought to the school by representatives from the Columbus Zoo.

On Thursday, thanks to a partnership with the Columbus International Program, Frances Khamo and Kenny Wafula came to Emerson to share facts and demonstrate a dance from their native Kenya.

The week concluded on Friday, November 21, when students got to sample food from around the world, thanks to the PTA.

Emerson Principal Monica Brown expressed her gratitude to all the wonderful volunteers who made this exceptional learning experience possible.
