Schools across Westerville City School District celebrated Veterans Day in various ways, from producing videos to honor those who served in the military to creating informative displays.
Emerson Elementary Principal Chris Poynter dressed in his field uniform from the U.S. Marine Corps and prepared Meals Ready-to-Eat (MRE) for students to sample. MREs are self-contained meals that include a variety of items such as an entree, side dish, crackers, peanut butter/cheese spread, dessert, and a heater to heat the main entree.
At Cherrington Elementary, music teacher Julie Porretta worked with students to create a video as part of the school’s Veterans Day program. Students brought pictures of their veterans as part of their Heroes Salute. Those in several grade levels worked on patriotic songs for the program. Members of a local boy scout troupe did a flag presentation. Watch the school’s Veterans Day salute here.
Meanwhile, Westerville South High School's Student Council created a video with messages of thanks and what America and the men and women who serve mean to them. They shared their finished piece to the VFW the school works with to be shared with their membership.
At the suggestion of a student, Westerville Central High School honored staff who are veterans and students who have family members on active duty with a donut breakfast.
Westerville North High School organized a display highlighting the branches of the military in the front lobby and featured a reading of the war poem, “In Flanders Field” during the morning announcements.
