It won’t be hard to miss the artwork by Alcott Elementary’s third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students this winter.

The blades of four Genoa Township snowplows serve as a canvas for their designs, which include a collection of flowers, an aquarium scene, their take on Van Gogh’s The Starry Night and snowflakes surrounding the phrase, “Let It Snow.”

Genoa Township officials approached Principal Earl Rahm at the start of the school year about having students paint snowplow blades. Rahm shared the proposal with art teacher Lee Johnson and both agreed it would be a great learning opportunity for students.

“This was an excellent project for community engagement and teaching the students how art can not only be something we look at but functional too,” Johnson said.

The project took three weeks to complete: Johnson worked with students on possible designs, outlining them on the snowplow blades. Students were divided into groups to paint on the four plows and were able to collaborate on colors as well as additional design elements.

“We are so excited to see them this winter,” Johnson said.
